Best Credit Cards for Utility Bill Payments Online in 2025

For the past few days, I’ve been sharing reviews to help you decide how to choose the best credit card based on your monthly expenses. I’ve already reviewed the best credit cards for groceries and online shopping, and now I’m helping you find the top card that gives the highest cashback on utility payments.
In my previous posts, I’ve already explained the best way to calculate your monthly expenses. Based on that, you can decide whether the recommended credit cards in this post are right for you. If a major part of your spending goes toward bills and utility payments, keep reading as we cover the top cards of 2025 available so far.
Remember, these are cashback cards that actually give you real cashback—unlike those 2x, 3x, or 10x rewards cards that only offer a few points even on large purchases. You need a good credit history to apply for and get approved for the cards listed. I recommend checking your credit score first: if it’s strong, you can go ahead with the process; if not, you can follow the tips to improve your score shared in this post and can check 1st Credit Card for Students (No Credit Score)
Which Utility Payments Are Eligible for Credit Card Cashback
Most consumers prefer to pay their utility bills using credit cards—especially if they have a card designed for bill payments and cashback. It’s important to understand what actually counts as a utility payment and which items fall under this category. Here’s the list I usually consider when I think of utility bills:
- Electricity bills (state electricity boards, private providers)
- Water bills (municipal water supply)
- Gas bills (piped natural gas connections)
- Mobile postpaid bills
- Broadband & landline bills
- DTH recharge
- Prepaid mobile recharge
- Municipal taxes & utility charges (in some cases)
- Insurance premium payments (some cards classify this as utility)
Now, let’s move straight to our list of credit cards.
Best Credit Cards for Utility/Bills Payments Online
There are plenty of cards for paying utility bills, but I’ve shortlisted only those that offer at least 5% cashback on bill payments—keeping this list short and useful for readers.
Card | Utility Payment Benefit | Caps, Limits & Fees | My Review |
---|---|---|---|
Axis Bank ACE Credit Card | 5% cashback on utility/recharge/DTH/mobile recharges when done via Google Pay. | – The combined cashback for 5% & 4% categories is capped at ₹500 per month. – Annual fee ₹499. | Very good if your utility + recharges bills are often paid via Google Pay, and you can hit the 5% category. The ₹500 cap means you’ll get max benefit up to a certain spend; beyond that, incremental utility spending gives lower rate (base/other categories). |
Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card | Offers 25% cashback or high rewards on Airtel-related utility/recharge/DTH etc. 10% cashback on utility/recharge via Airtel Thanks app | From the comparison: there’s capping: ~ ₹250 per month for the high % cashback on utility bills/recharges via the Airtel Thanks – Annual fee ₹500. | Great if you are heavily using Airtel services + the Thanks app. But the smaller cap means it’s useful only up to a point. If most bills are outside Airtel / or you don’t always use the app, benefit drops. |
Tata Neu Infinity (HDFC Bank) | Utility transactions earn NeuCoins, with the possibility of 5% back for bill payments via Tata Neu app | – Utility-transaction NeuCoins are capped at 2,000 NeuCoins per calendar month. – Annual fee ₹1500 (Limetime offer is currently live) | Excellent for those embedded in the Tata ecosystem (using Tata Neu App, shopping with Tata brands, etc.). If your utility payments can go through the Tata Neu App or partner brands, you can get very good return. |
SBI Cashback Card | Default cashback is 1% on utilities (electricity, mobile, DTH, etc.). Online spends (excluding utilities, rent, fuel, wallet loads) earn 5% cashback. | Cashback capped at ₹5,000 per month. – Annual fee ₹999 (waived on ₹2L annual spend). | Officially weak for utilities (only 1%), but there’s a workaround: buy Amazon Pay Gift Card (counts as online spend → 5% cashback) and then use them for bill payments via Amazon Pay. This trick boosts returns, though it involves extra steps and could be excluded if SBI updates T&Cs. |

I will update this list weekly—whenever a new card launches focused on bill payments or an existing card loses value and becomes less rewarding. Bookmark or share this list with others.
